Leon Jay Williams’s daughter celebrates first birthday

Taiwan–based Singaporean actor Leon Jay Williams, 39, celebrated the first birthday of his daughter, Harper Ann, and during her zhuazhou ceremony she picked up a credit card first, followed by a tube of lipstick and a passport.

“Maybe this means she’ll be wealthy and well-dressed and keep travelling overseas? It sounds like a good life,” Leon said.

Zhuazhou, held on a baby’s first birthday, is a Chinese custom that is said to give an indication of what profession it will enter when it grows up, with various items representing different industries laid out for it to pick from.

Leon and his wife, Joyce, moved to Singapore from Taiwan at the end of last year, and about eight of Joyce’s relatives flew in for Harper’s first birthday and zhuazhou.

Asked whether he’d allow his daughter to enter the entertainment industry, Leon said he will leave the decision to her, though he won’t be supportive of her if she chooses to do so.

Leon is currently filming Michelle Chong’s self-directed film Lulu the Movie in Singapore.
