Leon Jay Williams’s daughter celebrates first birthday

Taiwan–based Singaporean actor Leon Jay Williams, 39, celebrated the first birthday of his daughter, Harper Ann, and during her zhuazhou ceremony she picked up a credit card first, followed by a tube of lipstick and a passport.

“Maybe this means she’ll be wealthy and well-dressed and keep travelling overseas? It sounds like a good life,” Leon said.

Zhuazhou, held on a baby’s first birthday, is a Chinese custom that is said to give an indication of what profession it will enter when it grows up, with various items representing different industries laid out for it to pick from.

Leon and his wife, Joyce, moved to Singapore from Taiwan at the end of last year, and about eight of Joyce’s relatives flew in for Harper’s first birthday and zhuazhou.

Asked whether he’d allow his daughter to enter the entertainment industry, Leon said he will leave the decision to her, though he won’t be supportive of her if she chooses to do so.

Leon is currently filming Michelle Chong’s self-directed film Lulu the Movie in Singapore.

Julie Tan kicks off 2016 with a new man in her life

Julie Tan may be young — the actress turns 24 this September — but she’s got a clear idea of what she wants. The artiste, whose next role is in the longform drama series Peace and Prosperity, casually let on that she has been seeing a local entrepreneur 11 years her senior for a month now.

“As I mature, I just want stability, I don’t need a whirlwind romance,” Julie said. She describes her new beau as thoughtful though not a romantic. “Sometimes when I get tired filming or I skip meals, he’ll bring food over for me and remind me to eat,” she said. “Though it’s not a grand gesture, it’s more practical than giving me flowers.”

Did her preference for mature and steady guys, which she talked about when she appeared on the Toggle Talk series last year, influence her choice?

“It’s tricky when artistes date, and it’s tough to find someone who can accept the work you do,” she said. “So you need a person who’s mature and understanding. I’m very independent, but when it comes to love I need to be looked after, and my partner must accept that.”

The couple met through mutual friends about four or five months ago and are still at the stage of getting to know each other better. Julie emphasised that the 11-year age difference isn’t causing any generation gap.

Mystery man
But those curious about who the lucky guy is won’t be finding out his identity soon. The actress said she won’t make that detail public until their relationship is stable or if they’re about to marry.

Her past relationships were comparatively in the open and had names attached: She dated local model Ng Yuze for more than a year until 2013, and last year she was romantically linked with Taiwanese model Allen Chen.

But this time, Julie is making a change. She said her previous romance ended because both parties minded too much the comments of others and built their relationship on the expectations of other people. And though she confirmed names then out of respect for her other half, unintentionally it gave him pressure.

“Perhaps I could say I’m doing so to protect myself?” Julie said. “I used to be open about my love life, but it left me to clean up the mess myself.”

“Relationships drain mental energy as it is, and having to deal with the media (after a split) is exhausting.”

Longform drama
Julie will be testing her limits with her role in the 170-part Peace and Prosperity, playing the fifth granddaughter of a traditional Chinese medicine practice’s founder.

Last seen on screen in The Dream Makers 2 as the scheming antagonist Dong Zihuai, Julie is nervous about taking part in a longform drama for the first time.

“To portray a character from episode 1 to 100 isn’t as easy as it seems,” she said. “You need to grasp the flow of the character well, and you have to do your prep work.”

Taking on the extended project means a six-month shoot at the very least, which is to say Julie won’t be able to take on other gigs at the same time.

“I did want to accept Mercurial Men (a 20-part drama that’s slated to begin telecast in August), but I decided I should focus on this drama so I let that one go,” she said.

“I’m not thinking so much about it — to me, having work to do is a good thing.”

Peace and Prosperity debuts April 4, 7.30 pm on Channel 8.

Zayn Malik snogs Gigi Hadid in new music video

Zayn Malik gets close to Gigi Hadid in his first music video since leaving One Direction.

The former 'Night Changes' hitmaker shocked fans when he announced he was departing the chart-topping group last year but has now released his first solo offering, 'Pillowtalk'.

In the steamy video, the 20-year-old model - who is reportedly dating the 23-year-old singer - can also be seen posing for the camera as what appears to be blood rolls down her cheeks.

Since parting the group, Zayn promised to change his musical direction, evident by his new lyrics as he sings explicitly about sex.

In the chorus, he sings: "So we'll p**s off the neighbours / In the place that feels the tears / The place to lose your fears

Yeah, reckless behaviour.

"A place that is so pure, so dirty and raw / Be in the bed all day, bed all day, bed all day / F***ing you, and fighting on / It's our paradise and it's our war zone."

Meanwhile, Zayn previously teased fans that it was pretty "black and white" that his single would address the topic of sex.

He said: "I think I'm pretty black and white about what it's about. Everybody has sex, and it's something people want to hear about. It's part of everybody's life, a very big part of life! And you don't want to sweep it under the carpet. It has to be talked about."

Sonia Sui attends first event after childbirth

Taiwanese actress and model Sonia Sui, 35, has returned to work after giving birth to her son, Max, last August in Singapore.

She attended a fashion event yesterday and revealed that she wasn’t used to being back at work after a five-month break — before leaving the house, she couldn’t find the camisole and thong she used to wear to attend events, she said.

Regarding her fan’s recent comment that her son resembled Taiwanese actor Joseph Cheng, Sonia said her husband wasn’t comfortable with it after he heard about it. “It certainly is odd that a child looks like some other man (instead of its father),” she said.

The actress posted a series of photos of Max on her Facebook page on Monday morning, showing the baby in a sweater and sporting a side-part. Max couldn’t keep his balance and leaned to one side.

The secret quibbles of Candyce and Junyang

She finds him a bit of a nag; he worries that she’ll overwork herself.

“I’m often up until 3 or 4 a.m. in my studio, and she’ll be working in secret in the bedroom,” Ang Junyang, 34, said of his wife of five years, Candyce Toh, 35. “And when she knows I’m coming over she’ll pack up quickly and go to sleep.”

Not to be outdone, Candyce fought back. “Sometimes I’m glad he’s not around because he loves to nag, he’ll keep repeating the same lines without ever rephrasing them, like a pesky fly. It’s so annoying!” she said.

“I’m so used to it now that once he starts I space out, and because he says the same thing all the time, even when I refocus my attention on him, I’ll know exactly what he just said.”

Candyce and Junyang met on the first season of televised singing competition Project SuperStar back in 2005 — Candyce reached the top 10 and Junyang emerged the male runner-up. The pair announced last October that they were expecting their first child, a girl due in early April.

Pampered princess
Both their families seem more nervous about the new arrival than they are. “They’ve bought clothes (for the baby), she’s the first granddaughter for both our parents so I think she’ll be quite pampered,” Candyce said. “I hope she doesn’t suffer the princess syndrome.”

The couple have only shortlisted a few English names (the Chinese name will have to wait), and the nursery and baby products have yet to be prepared. Living apart for months at a stretch — Junyang works in music production at Ocean Butterflies in Taiwan, while Candyce stays in Singapore to run Cafe Manuka in Paragon and, now, IMM — meant Candyce’s family had to look after her and her goldie, Tuffy, on Junyang’s behalf.

After four years of working abroad, Junyang will stay in Singapore until his daughter is born. He has requested to be transferred to Singapore, he added.
“You ask if I could bear to give it up? Of course I can’t,” he said of his overseas music career. “Taiwan is where Mandarin music is at, and many musicians dream of working in the Taiwan music industry.”

“The culture in Taiwan is different from Singapore’s and I’ve developed rapport with my colleagues there, but for the sake of my child and family, it’s worth it.”

He’ll put aside his work for now, and moving his family to Taiwan is still on the cards. “But when our daughter is ready for school, we’ll have to move back here,” Junyang said. “I hope she’ll get her education in Singapore.”

Family and business
Candyce has opted for a natural delivery, and Junyang will be by her side in the delivery room when the time comes.

“I won’t be recording (the birth) though — my hands will shake,” he said. “But seeing a new life being born, I think I’ll cry. I’ve been trying to imagine what it would feel like, and I’m looking forward to it.”

The career-minded Candyce will return to work after her month-long postpartum confinement period is over. And though she’s still open to taking on acting or hosting gigs, she’ll be more selective about the ones she accepts.

“It’s my own business after all,” she said of Cafe Manuka, which she and her sister bought over from a New Zealand couple in 2014. “When we took over the first store (in Paragon), it was hassle-free and we were making money, but we started this second outlet from scratch and we had to do everything ourselves.”

“Women still need their own careers, that way we won’t annoy our husbands and they can focus on their work too.”

Junyang ribbed her, “Play the role of an expectant mother, that way you won’t have to strap on the fake belly and you can go on set just as you are.”

Angelica Lee expecting twins with husband Oxide Pang

Malaysian actress Angelica Lee, 40, announced on Weibo and Facebook today that she was expecting twins with her husband, Hong Kong director Oxide Pang, 50.

“In this new year, we look forward to welcoming two new additions with hearts full of joy,” she wrote.

Angelica weathered through her husband’s two cheating scandals with a brave front.

She forgave him when he was photographed holding hands with and kissing Chinese model–actress Liddy Li in May 2014. And she stood by him when he was suspected of cheating again last March when he was snapped behaving intimately with a woman in a Bangkok pub.

The couple married in 2010 and have a 16-year-old daughter, Yan Yan, from Oxide’s previous marriage.

Scott Disick trying to 'calm down'

Scott Disick is trying to "calm down".

The 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians' star - who split from Kourtney Kardashian, his partner of nearly a decade, last year - wants to put his past behind him and focus on his children, Mason, six, Penelope, three and Reign, 13 months.

When asked to describe himself in his own words on Kocktails With Khloe, he said: "But at the end of the day people say focus on work, make more money. I have money.

"The more money I have, the less happy I am. So the only thing I'm trying to focus on is just calming down, and just focusing on the kids, and just trying to be a good dad."

The 32-year-old television personality also insists money and material things aren't important to him and he is more worried about the feelings of his friends and family.

He added: "A lot of people think that [I] only care about money and cars, and don't realise it's more just about insecurities, and how much I care about my friends and my family.

"I really would rather never be in a tabloid again, but if I'm gonna be, at least it should be about that Scott isn't what everybody thinks he is."

JJ Lin reveals the secret behind his signature

JJ Lin has been a busy man. Last Christmas, he released his 13th studio album From M.E. to Myself and has been busy with promotions. Since then, he has also emerged as one of the Top 10 Singers of the Year at Taiwan’s 11th KKBOX Music Awards.

Since his debut 13 years ago, his fans have spent much time and effort analysing his seemingly simple signature, which the local singer-songwriter revealed actually has a lot of thought behind it.

Two of the most common assumptions are that his signature is merely his initials, JJ, or his surname in Mandarin, Lin (林). JJ shared that these are both wrong, and that his signature includes his full name, Junjie. The way he signs his name, however, coincidentally looks like his surname in Mandarin.

His unique way of dishing out signatures has earned him a spot in history. Back in 2007, he became the record holder of most number of continuous autographs signed when he was promoting his fifth album, West Side. JJ’s record 3052 signatures in two and a half hours meant that he completed each autograph within three seconds. The artiste has since laughingly declared himself as the most efficient at fan signings in the world.

Leonardo DiCaprio: Titanic has affected my personal life

Leonardo DiCaprio thinks appearing in 'Titanic' has affected his personal life.

The 41-year-old actor - who has dated a string of beauties, including Kelly Rohrbach, Toni Garrn, Gisele Bundchen and Bar Refaeli - shot to global fame following his lead role in the 1997 movie and still feels uneasy having so much attention on him.

He said: "It was a surreal point in my life. You become this sort of independent actor and then you are in this one film that for whatever reason connects with people on a worldwide level.

"And you are at this really young age and you don't know how to react to it. My immediate reaction was to stop everything and take a break and let it settle down.

"But it has affected my personal life ever since. I don't think you ever get used to the type of attention certainly the media has on you."

Leonardo faced gruelling conditions working on his latest movie 'The Revenant' and admits it was just as tough shooting 'Titanic', albeit a very different experience.

He told Empire magazine: "They are pretty neck and neck. I couldn't choose between them. They are apples and oranges though, one had a lot of stages, the other was in nature.

"But the film time was equivalent ... Let's put it this way, they were both difficult for different reasons. Although both had cold water."

Is there a chance for Luhan, Tao & Kris to return to EXO?

Luhan, Tao and Kris made their public departures from Hallyu group EXO, with Tao making the announcement in August 2015 and the other two, in 2014. Their contracts were never formally nullified with label S.M. Entertainment.

Since their departure, the group has went on as nine and has become even more successful, recently winning the Disk Daesang (Grand Prize) for the third year running at the annual Golden Disk Awards. Individually, the three have also been extremely successful in their solo ventures, with Wu Yi Fan (Kris) involved in Stephen Chow’s movie The Mermaid, Luhan confirmed for Zhang Yimou’s film The Great Wall and Z.TAO (Tao) releasing his solo mini album last year.

Despite their progress since going their separate ways, there has been renewed hope that the trio might make their return to the group. The newest flurry of speculation emerged after a Chinese equivalent of Wikipedia, Baike Baidu, removed the three names from the list of artistes who have nullified contracts with S.M. Entertainment. Their names have since been reinstated on that list.

Much like Wikipedia, the site allows users to edit information, thus giving rise to questions over whether the edit was made by a fan who personally wanted them to make their grand return to EXO. However, other netizens pointed out that S.M. has never formally removed the three members’ names from their official website, whereas for other groups, such as Girls’ Generation, Super Junior and f(x), former members’ names are no longer on their official sites.

This has resulted in heated discussions on popular Chinese social networking site Weibo, with the hashtag #LuhanWuYiFanHuangZiTaoReturntoEXO drawing mixed reactions from fans. While some expressed their fervent desire to see all 12 original members stand as one once again, others have pointed out that they are all doing well now and that there is no need for them to force themselves into a situation they would rather not be in.

Kevin Cheng, Grace Chan make first commercial appearance as a couple

Hong Kong actors Kevin Cheng, 46, and Grace Chan, 24, made their first commercial appearance as a couple on Sunday.

The pair turned on the charm and acted affectionately before the audience, with Grace feeding her beau a piece of Chinese New Year candy and tying a scarf on him.

When the event host asked the couple to kiss on stage, Kevin managed to wiggle his way out of the challenge by saying, “Then we’ll have to go backstage to prepare for that.”

The couple also held hands during the event and had red string tied to their right arms.

Asked how it felt to attend an event together, Grace said, “Everyone had a lot of fun!” But on whether they would make another couple appearance on Valentine’s Day, Kevin said, “Doing this just once in a while is acceptable.”

The pair reportedly pocketed HK$800,000 (approximately S$146,000) for Sunday’s event, but Kevin denied the amount was that high, and said the compensation was satisfactory.

Grace and Kevin have been dating for a year now, after they met while filming the vampire-themed drama series Blue Veins.

Elva Hsiao, Elroy Cheo reportedly split 6 months ago

Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao, 36, has reportedly been separated from her Singaporean beau, businessman Elroy Cheo, for about half a year, according to Taiwan media.

A source close to Elva revealed that it was their incompatible personalities that caused the breakup. Elva’s two-year relationship with Elroy was rumoured to be in trouble last July, but the couple talked it through and made up. But in the end they decided to part, and though they remain good friends, neither intends to reconcile again.

Elroy unfollowing Elva on Instagram did not lead to their breakup, the source added.

The singer began dating Elroy, Vanness Wu’s brother-in-law, in 2014 after she split from Taiwanese actor Kai Ko.

While performing at a company event on Saturday night, Elva didn’t give a clear reply when asked whether she was still seeing Elroy. Instead she said she was focusing on her work for now, but in future she’s open to relationships with marriage in mind.

Louis Tomlinson nearly missed birth of son

Louis Tomlinson nearly missed the birth of his son after being banned from the delivery room.

The One Direction singer's former fling Briana Jungwirth gave birth to their son, Sydney Rain, on Friday (22.01.16), but the 24-year-old star reportedly had to spend most of the time the 23-year-old blonde was in labour sitting in his car after an argument with her parents.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Briana's mother Tammi went berserk at him in the hospital. He spent a lot of the time she was in labour sat in his car because Tammi wouldn't let him near Briana.

"He's looked after her very well but Tammi feels it's not enough. They are trying to work out a custody deal."

Despite the near miss, Louis - who is now dating Danielle Campbell - did eventually get to see his first child being brought into the world and later admitted he is "very happy".

Confirming the little one's birth, he tweeted: "I'm pleased to say my baby son was born yesterday :) He is healthy and pretty amazing :) I'm very happy!! (sic)"

It is not yet known whether Sydney will take Louis or Briana's surname, but the stylist's family are said to have "slightly exaggerated expectations" about how much the hunk should be paying for child support each month.

A source said: "There's already a lot of talk about who is going to pay what. The family have slightly exaggerated expectations of what Louis should be contributing every month."

GFriend′s Yuju Talks About Viral Video of Her Falling on Stage

GFriend′s Yuju opened up about the girl group′s now-viral performance in the rain in which she fell numerous times onstage.

GFriend appeared as guests on the January 25 broadcast of KBS Cool FM′s Kim Seong Ju′s Gayo Plaza, where Kim Won Jun and Lee Se Jun, who were serviing as special DJs, said to the girls, "Wasn′t there a performance that became a hot topic because you fell numerous times? Who was the member that fell then?" GFriend′s Yuju raised her hand, saying "It′s an episode that happened because I made a mistake, but I was touched because people from abroad and in Korea had such warm words for me. I gained strength through it."

Yuju added, "I twisted my finger on stage that day, but I actually didn′t suffer any major injuries."

Meanwhile, GFriend was invited to be the day′s guests on the show, while Kim Won Jun and Lee Se Jun served as special DJs for Kim Seong Ju.

Michelle Chen might not marry this year

Taiwanese actress Michelle Chen, 32, became engaged to Chinese actor Chen Xiao, 28, last October, but the actress said she’s so busy working that she might not have time to get married this year.

“I’ve always wanted to get married, but I’ve been so busy lately, I haven’t had time to make preparations,” she said.

At a event in Hong Kong yesterday, Michelle said she’s been occupied promoting her new movie Run for Love, which premieres on February 14, and she hasn’t had the chance to go on vacation yet.

Asked whether this year would be her last Valentine’s Day as a single person, she said, “No, I didn’t think that much, I’m not thinking of marriage yet.”

She added she doesn’t yet know whether she’ll be working on Valentine’s Day, but if she isn’t she’ll consider going out for a movie with Chen Xiao and giving him a gift, though she isn’t sure what to give him.

And as for the type of wedding she prefers, Michelle said she would like a small wedding with family and close friends present, and she should be holding her wedding in both mainland China and Taiwan.

Michelle and Chen Xiao met on the set of 2014 Chinese drama series The Romance of the Condor Heroes.

Sylvester Sim’s grandma chided him over his flirting scandal

It took Sylvester Sim nearly 10 years to return to the music scene with his latest single, ‘A New Hope,’ but what would have been a smashing comeback was overshadowed by the flirting scandal the 2004 Singapore Idol runner-up found himself embroiled in mere days before the track launch on January 19.

The singer, who turned 33 the same day, had been accused of having an affair with a local married singer when their suggestive text message exchange was published online, though he emphasised they were innocent.

The lady, who sang at the Unplugged music lounge where he is an entertainment manager, had been going through some family issues that affected her work performance, and he was merely showing concern, he explained.

Family matters
Nevertheless, Sylvester did receive a tongue-lashing from his grandmother. “So many days have passed and she still won’t let it rest,” he said at the launch event–birthday party held at Zouk. “She told me, ‘I’ve always reminded you to change the way you speak, but you just wouldn’t listen.’” His parents jumped in too, telling him not to be kaypoh and to stay out of other people’s business.

Sylvester said he has always been a charming talker. “Those who know me all know I’m frank and I’m like that to everyone, even guys — that’s why I was once suspected of being gay.”

“I won’t change my personality just because of some incident, but now I’ve learned to be considerate towards others, especially my wife. Some traits are hard to change, but I will try to be careful with what I say.”

The singer married his Chinese dancer girlfriend in 2012 after they dated for five years.

Sylvester came clean with his wife after the news of the alleged affair broke. “At the start she was angry, but after I explained things to her she understood it all,” he said. “She didn’t throw a fit or cry, and it made me feel even more guilty.”

“I’ll be more thoughtful to her, and I won’t go my own way again.”

Music collaborations
Sylvester launched his debut album, Take Flight, in 2005, and was once invited to be a special guest during Jolin Tsai’s Singapore concert. Now, Sylvester has signed with SGEE Ventures, run by his good friend and now manager, Pamm.

He contributed vocals to actor Ian Fang’s debut rap single, ‘First Attempt,’ released last Christmas, and he plans to release a new full-length album at the end of this year, one with a host of local musical talent pitching in to create a Singaporean-style record; he’s in talks with Ian, Project SuperStar winner Alfred Sim and GeTai Challenge champion Desmond Ng.

“All these years, I’ve been involved with music and I’ve met many underground musicians with immense talent,” he said. “Another reason for my comeback is to gather these musicians and produce an album, so the international audience will know Singapore has such massive talent.”

Sylvester Sim’s latest single, ‘A New Hope,’ is available on all digital platforms.

Celine Dion greets mourners at husband's wake

Celine Dion personally greeted mourners at her husband's wake on Thursday (21.01.16).

The 47-year-old singer struggled to hold back her tears as she stood by René Angélil's open casket inside the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Canada.

Wearing a black gown and net veil, Celine was comforted by her mother Thérèse and her eldest son Rene-Charles, 14, as she watched hundreds of relatives, politicians and fans pay their last respects to René.

She was seen dabbing her eyes at points with a tissue as the wake proved somewhat overwhelming.

At one point, when she was left alone with the casket, Celine was seen tenderly placing her hands on her spouse's body as she bid him goodbye.

Mourners at the wake were greeted by a huge portrait of René on a large screen outside the cathedral.

René will be laid to rest in a state funeral that will be held at the venue on Friday (22.01.16), and the service will also be streamed live worldwide.

After René's death, following a lengthy battle with throat cancer, Celine took to her Facebook page to post a touching tribute to her husband and manager.

She wrote: "He will be remembered as a gentle man, generous and kind, an unprecedented visionary, a modern Pygmalion, a Renaissance man.

"All who had the privilege of knowing him and of working closely with him, whether personally or professionally, salute a leader and a man of great intelligence and wisdom."

Eurasian male model commits suicide after sending last message to By2’s Miko

Jack Luck, an Australian–Korean model and co-host of “Taiwan Taste” programme on Fox TV’s Chinese channel, was found dead in a suspected suicide in his Taipei home yesterday morning, and the last text messages he sent were to Miko, the older twin in the Singaporean pop duo By2.

Jack reportedly died around 5 a.m. He was 25.

Less than half an hour before he took his own life, he sent a series of messages to Miko, ending with “Forget it. Everything. Take care” when the latter didn’t reply after six minutes.

The pop singer later posted the exchange on her Instagram account and wrote, “Got your text this morning. It was too late when I saw it. I still couldn't believe it's true. My dear Jack, if only I was there when you needed me.”

The pair were once rumoured to be romantically involved.

Jack reportedly never recovered from the death of his girlfriend, a public relations executive who had heart trouble and died in his arms when her heart stopped two years ago.

He once said that despite being together for a year and 11 days, he loved her forever.

Singer Show Luo’s ‘We’re all Chinese’ video clip suspected of being doctored

After Taiwanese pop singer Show Luo, 36, got flamed online for declaring at a January 14 press conference that “(t)here’s no need to make such a clear distinction, because we’re all Chinese,” netizens are now debating whether the video clip of him saying so had been doctored.

A longer video of Show at the media event has been released. In the full clip the words seen printed on the stage backdrop are different, and the segment with Show referring to himself as Chinese does not appear at all, leading some fans to believe the incriminating video of Show had been falsified.

However, other netizens pointed out that in both the short and full videos, Show and the emcee appeared wearing the same outfits, so the missing “we are all Chinese” segment meant it had been edited out of the longer video.

In response, Show’s management agency issued a statement that read: “Show is a Taiwanese born and bred, but he is also a Chinese who grew up receiving a Chinese-culture education! If politicians can’t even sort out cross-Strait relations, please don’t keep asking artistes who just want to focus on their performances.”

Show infuriated Taiwanese fans when he made the comment, and many rebuked him online for forgetting his Taiwanese aboriginal roots.

Campus SuperStar 2007 winner Shawn Tok returns with English EP

Shawn Tok, who emerged champion of the televised singing competition Campus SuperStar in 2007 at just age 13, has returned to the scene with a five-track English EP, Chapter 22, almost five years after his debut record, a full-length Mandarin album entitled Travel With Time.

Chapter 22 was released digitally on January 8, also his 22nd birthday, and it entered at #2 on the Singapore iTunes album chart, behind Blackstar by David Bowie and ahead of 25 by Adele.

The EP set Shawn’s parents back close to $10,000 and featured the work of his National Service acquaintances and fans turned friends, who contributed their talents in production, videography, photography and more. Shawn helmed the production of Chapter 22 and managed and planned the record from Australia (where he’s based), from selecting the tracks to the recording arrangement and the album art design.

Making the EP was his way of saying hello to adulthood, something meaningful when he looks back on it in future, Shawn said, but it might have had a different titled had it not been delayed. The record was supposed to have coincided with Shawn’s 21st birthday, but it was difficult doing the project while overseas and having to juggle various aspects of his life, he said.

Plus, the University of Queensland student said he’s always preferred English music, even during his Campus SuperStar days when he performed hits from Jay Chou, JJ Lin and MayDay. He readily named American actress and singer-songwriter Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as his music inspiration — “I really, really look up to Beyoncé in every way because she’s an all-rounder,” he said — and he listed jazz, rap and hip hop among his favourite genres.

But Shawn said he hesitated for a long time before committing to producing an English EP. “It’d been 7 years since I won the (Campus SuperStar) competition,” he said. “And I didn’t know if I should do it or how the response would be, so it held me back … I’m glad it turned out well.”

Artistic pursuits
Besides singing, Shawn has branched out into acting, with roles in the 2008 telemovie Heng or Huat, Channel 5’s Seven Days in 2010 and Okto’s Dream School the following year, among other projects. “I actually want to do everything,” he said. “I want to do acting, singing, hosting, everything.”

“But when it comes to something to focus on it’s definitely music, because performing is the only thing I picture myself doing for the rest of my life.”

The drive to do everything got Shawn enrolled in film and television studies, as well as media communication, at the University of Queensland, where he’s completed his first year.

“I wanted to be a director at 17 because I wanted to do short films and I like to do studio stuff and lighting,” he said. For some of his own shows, the singer would set up his own backdrop, engage dancers and choose their outfits, he said. “I wanted to take charge of everything to give it a complete feel rather than (leave it) half-done.”

He has two more years of his studies to go, and whether he decides on singing, acting or photography for his future is up in the air.

But one arena he hasn’t set out to conquer is reality singing competitions, which ironically gave him his start. Shawn said he wouldn’t enter another one. “It’s not just you (who’s) involved, it’s your whole family,” he explained.

“It’s tiring and I don’t want to go through the whole thing again,” though he added he hadn’t put as much thought into it when he signed up for Campus SuperStar in 2007. “I was 13, so just go,” he said.

But considering the exposure it brought him and also the nudges, the glances and getting recognised on the streets as far afield as Venice and Switzerland, would he go through with Campus SuperStar again?

“Maybe not,” he said after a lengthy pause. “I don’t know, so many things happened.”

“Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn’t, I don’t know, but at that point, it was a yes.”

Chapter 22 is available now on iTunes and at all Beesket outlets from January 16.

Lemmy Kilmister died from prostate cancer

Lemmy Kilmister died from prostate cancer.

It was previously revealed that the Motörhead frontman battled with an "aggressive" cancer but the death certificate, obtained by TMZ, has confirmed that the musician suffered from cancer of the prostate and congestive heart failure.

Meanwhile, it was a post on the band's official website that confirmed the tragic passing of the 'Ace of Spades' hitmaker, who was only 70-years-old.

A statement at the time read: "There is no easy way to say this...our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it's way down the street, with his family.

"We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren't words. We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please...play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy's music LOUD. (sic)"

Lemmy was laid to rest in Los Angeles on January 9 where the likes of Slash and Dave Grohl paid tribute to the late star.

Speaking at the funeral, the Guns N' Roses' frontman said: "Lemmy was somebody I just feel so honoured to have been friends with. He lived his life the way he wanted to ... his music and personality will last forever."

Alfred Sim bares battle scars and more for debut EP

Alfred Sim readily agreed to go fully nude to portray a prehistoric caveman in his first music video, ‘Make a Call (Bo Yi Tong Dian Hua),’ one of the five tracks on his self-titled debut EP. “The director wanted the look to give a feeling of being battered and worn out, and convey the hardships I’ve endured in my music career,” the 34-year-old singer said.

But on the day of the 15-hour shoot, Alfred backed out, and he filmed the sequence wearing shorts. “When it came down to it, I felt shy about it and thankfully the director didn’t insist I follow through,” he said during his EP launch event on January 14 at Switch by Timbre.

In the 5-minute music video, the Project SuperStar 2014 champion evolves onscreen from unkempt homo erectus to modern man in a snazzy suit. He didn’t give up the idea of going the full monty entirely; instead, he had one of his promotional photos shot stark naked. He had, after all, invested two months in doing sit-ups to prepare for filming in the buff.

“My physique isn’t too shabby to begin with, but I had stopped working out as much so I thought I should train for the shoot,” said the former national sportsman and Edith Cowan University sports science graduate.

“Anyway, I’m not an idol singer. Probably no one would care if I had bared it all, so it doesn’t matter!”

Second anniversary
But one person would care: his wife, singer-songwriter Tay Kewei. Asked whether his spouse minded that he had intended to be on camera fully nude, Alfred replied with a laugh, “My wife said, ‘Great! I want to see that!’”

The couple, who married on January 4, 2013, marked their second anniversary two weeks ago, but their celebration in Bintan was planned entirely by Kewei.

“Wedding anniversaries should be organised by husbands, so I feel bad for letting my wife do it,” Alfred said. “When I’m done promoting the EP, I’ll make it up to her.”

The pair are still living with their respective parents while waiting for their new home to be ready in 2017, and they stay over at each other’s houses now and then.

“Perhaps this arrangement would get in the way of having children,” Alfred said. “But we hope we can have a baby within the year — children make a home complete.”

The singer hopes to have a boy “so we can exercise and work out together, but of course I’ll leave it to fate,” he said.

Decent acting
After beating 12 finalists to win the third season of Project SuperStar in 2014, Alfred earned a one-year contract with Mediacorp and went on to land roles as a music competition emcee in Channel 8’s Crescendo and as You Yi’s husband in Don’t Worry, Be Healthy, out this year. But the contract expired in late 2015, and Alfred chose not to renew it.

The remuneration wasn’t an issue, he explained, but he wants to focus on music and his athletics training business, REACTIV. He hopes to release another record this year too.

But Alfred isn’t yet ready to give up acting just yet. He said he’s happy to consider taking part in drama series in future, and he’s interested in being in movies.

“After working on Don’t Worry, Be Healthy, I think I’m actually a decent actor,” he said. “I didn’t do retakes, and the director didn’t scold me!”

Alfred Sim’s self-titled debut EP is available in all major stores.

Don’t Worry, Be Healthy debuts February 16, 8.30 pm on Channel 8.

Chris Rock won't quit Oscars

Chris Rock won't pull out of hosting the upcoming Academy Awards.

Although high profile black celebrities including Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee have decided to boycott the ceremony in protest at the lack of diversity in the nominations, Chris reportedly believes he has a better chance of making an impact if he hosts.

A source told Naughty Gossip: "Behind the scenes Chris is under extreme pressure to pull out. Many people think he would help progress be made if he quits his hosting job."

"However, Chris is listening to what they have to say, but thinks he will have a bigger impact by doing the show. He thinks it is easier to make a difference from the inside."

Chris has already blasted the lack of diversity in the nominations, posting a quip on Twitter which read: "The #Oscars. The White BET Awards (sic)."

Meanwhile, Jada confirmed this week she had made the difficult decision to give the world-famous event a miss because she disagreed with the lack of non-white actors nominated but gave Chris her blessing to host.

In a video message posted on Facebook, Jada said: "Chris, I will not be at the Academy Awards and I won't be watching but I can't think of a better man to do the job at hand this year then you, my friend. Good luck."

And while director Spike has joined Jada in her boycott, revealing he and his wife Tonya Lewis Lee will not be present for the awards this year, he also showed his support for Chris.

He wrote on Instagram: "OscarsSoWhite... Again. We cannot support it and mean no disrespect to my friends, host Chris Rock and producer Reggie Hudlin, president Isaacs and the Academy. But, how is it possible for the 2nd consecutive year all 20 contenders under the actor category are white?"
