Charlyn Lin films Rites of Motherhood while carrying her second child

Charlyn Lin is one gutsy mum.

Known for hosting the celebrity travel programme Going Home, Charlyn recently took things up a notch with Channel U’s Rites of Motherhood, a new show exploring childbirth practices in Taiwan, Cambodia, Bali in Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Japan. And what’s more, she covered the various locations while pregnant with her second child.

Despite the bumpy and muddy roads the team covered for the programme, “I didn’t want the crew to worry, so I only told them I was pregnant when filming was about to end,” she said.

“When we weren’t filming, I’d switch off my lapel microphone and talk to the baby in my belly. I’d tell it where we are and to behave.”

In an exclusive interview with Toggle, the 37-year-old chatted about her pregnancy and her recent work on Rites of Motherhood. For the Japan leg of filming, the soon-to-be mother-of-two prepared fresh lemons to give her a daily dose of vitamin C and protect her from radiation. And while in India, Charlyn drank only bottled water and ate canned food and MSG-free instant noodles to guard against food poisoning.

The process of filming the programme was a journey of learning for the second-time mum, Charlyn said. While in a Cambodian village on the Laotian border with no electricity or running water, she was introduced to the local custom of placing women who have just given birth upon a hot oven for days.

“The climate is so warm, many women can’t handle it and die during their confinement,” Charlyn said. The experience taught her to appreciate what she had. “We may not live in large houses here, but pregnancy and childbirth are happy occasions. But to these Cambodian women, it’s a battle between life and death.”

She also recounted a harrowing experience in Bali, where local stringers blackmailed the filming crew. (No one was hurt, though.)

“I knew I was in no physical danger,” Charlyn said. “But I was more worried about not making it back to Singapore in time to teach my Saturday class.”

Second-time bliss
Charlyn’s husband, Alfred Tang, announced on his personal website on Sunday that they were expecting their second child. The host is three months along now, and due in March 2016, but the couple did not confirm the gender of the foetus.

“It’ll be a surprise,” Charlyn said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or girl, what’s most important is that the baby is healthy and happy.”

Charlyn and Alfred married in 2009, and their eldest, Caleb, was born two years later. This latest pregnancy was planned for, she said, because Caleb is nearly four, so it was time to welcome a second child.

And actress Zoe Tay had a part to play in Charlyn’s pregnancy, the host revealed. “Filming for Rites of Motherhood began in July after I accepted the offer to host the programme, and I told my husband we should put our baby plans on hold,” she said.

“But I met Zoe in a dressing room one day, and she said, ‘You think it’s so easy to get pregnant?’ She talked about a string of cases [of infertility] and I freaked out. That night when I got home I said to my husband, ‘No, we have to keep going!’”

And even with a baby on board, Charlyn won’t be taking things easy yet. “The baby is as fit as I am, so if there are hosting jobs I will still accept them,” she said.

“My hosting high should be ending soon, so remember to look me up for gigs!”

Rites of Motherhood premieres on October 22 at 9.30 pm on Channel U and airs every Thursday.

Summer Meng declines Mickey Huang’s marriage proposal

After successfully reconciling with two celebrity former lovers, Dee Hsu and Bowie Tsang, at the recent Golden Bell Awards, it seems Mickey Huang isn’t having the same luck with his current girlfriend, actress Summer Meng.

After the awards show, Summer posted a carefully worded Facebook update congratulating Mickey on winning Best Variety Show Host as the presenter of countdown programme Global Chinese Music: “Congratulations to all the winners. I probably should calm down. Those who work hard will get what they deserve, and I hope someday I may appear on the red carpet through my own efforts.”

“But no matter what, I will devote myself to producing better shows for everyone. I love what I do and I love performing. Congratulations to you too, and I will apply myself to run faster.”

Yesterday, Summer added a new Facebook post that said she was at a stage where she wanted to focus on her career. “I need to calm down because I’m more moved than excited, but we needn’t choose between our careers and relationships,” she wrote. “Marriage takes time to plan.”

Mickey publicly proposed to Summer after accepting his Golden Bell award. After thanking those who worked on Global Chinese Music, he added, “And to my dearest Summer, no matter how many awards I win, let’s set aside some time to get married!”

In response, Mickey said, “Marriage has always been about two people, two families, or even two management agencies, so what she says goes.”

Blue Lan accepts Best Actor Golden Bell from fellow ex of Barbie Hsu

After Dee Hsu and Bowie Tsang shared the Golden Bell Awards stage as former girlfriends of entertainer Mickey Huang, another pair in the same situation found themselves in the spotlight at the Emmy Awards of Taiwan.

Actor and former F4 member Vic Chou presented the Best Actor award to Blue Lan at last night’s ceremony. The two had both dated Taiwanese actress and host Barbie Hsu, Dee’s older sister. Vic, Blue and Barbie starred in the hit 2001 Taiwanese idol drama Meteor Garden.

Winning the honour for the 2014 television series Apple In Your Eye, Blue said he was grateful for the award, and added that Vic had told him in private that “what’s yours will be yours.” Actor and singer Wilber Pan later pulled the pair in for an epic selfie, à la Ellen DeGeneres.

Barbie also sent Blue her congratulations, saying, “He deserved to win, and I’m happy for him.” But she made no mention of her former lovers meeting on stage.

Blue didn’t take the episode too seriously, and said, “Look at what Dee Hsu did — our history is nowhere as explosive as theirs.”

Asked when he might be planning for a second child with wife Jade Chou, Blue said, “As soon as possible.” Their first child was born this May.

Grace Chow declares love for Show Luo on social media app?

Grace Chow, the Chinese blogger and rumoured girlfriend of Taiwanese singer Show Luo, has hit back at rumours that she had posted a digitally blurred photo of her and Show accompanied by a declaration of love.

In a Weibo post, she wrote, “I feel like I’m developing split personality using just Weibo and Instagram, so for all those other social media apps, I just want to say that if I’m on it, those are fake accounts! Don’t trust them!

“I don’t know how to use those platforms. And to those people impersonating me and posting nonsense, you’re pathological liars!”

An account on new social media platform 17 purportedly under Grace’s name shared the altered photo with a message saying, “Hahaha this is the first time we’re making our photo public, guess who he is! Hahahaha, I just love being with you.”

Though the two faces in the photo were blurred out, a pair of eyes was left untouched, and their resemblance to Show’s was striking, leaving fans guessing whether Grace had indeed revealed her feelings towards Show.

Since April, Grace and Show have been rumoured to be dating, but lately the pair are said to have hit a rough patch. Fans speculate that their spending more time apart has affected their relationship, and that Grace is upset with Show being too friendly with Taiwan host Linda Chien, once rumoured to be seeing Show.

Celebs have a ‘fruitful’ time practicing for President’s Star Charity 2015

“Be a hero, change the world” – this year’s President’s Star Charity 2015 (PSC2015) theme is all about inspiring and encouraging individuals to step forward and help people in need. Local and regional celebrities will lead by example and do their part to help raise funds for 86 beneficiaries through song and dance at the one-night-only charity bonanza on October 18.

It won’t be your run of the mill performances – there are hip hop dance segments with a dance group for the deaf (Redeafination), a cajon drumming session by players with disabilities from Lighthouse School and local celebs, including Jack & Rai and Aisyah Aziz, and a Dikir Barat face-off between Najib Ali and Bryan Wong, just to name a few.

At the press conference for PSC2015 yesterday afternoon, some celebrity performers put up a brief preview of two musical line-ups to be expected at the charity show.

Despite attending only two practice sessions thus far, Shane Pow gamely demonstrated a short segment on the cajon with his instructor, Arthur, while fellow performers Paige Chua and 987FM deejays Kimberly Wang and Sonia Chew clapped along to the beats.

Playing the instrument reminded Shane of his schooling days when he would “bang on the tables” in class. “I probably build up a sense of rhythm [from it],” he chuckled in interview with Toggle, “It’s a bit similar but this is more cool lah.”
Unlike Shane who had a relatively easy time learning the instrument, self-declared “instrumentally-retarded” Kimberly is stressed about her music-playing gig. During the demonstration on stage, the petite deejay could be audibly heard mouthing the rhythmic lyrics (“banana, banana, watermelon, watermelon”) by her co-members.

Explaining about the use of fruits, Sonia shared that their instructor Arthur formulated a unique teaching method to help them better remember the rhythmic lyrics by likening the number of beats to the number of syllables in a word (“Ba-na-na is three beats and wa-ter-me-lon is four beats,” she quipped).

As compared to her peers, Paige, who is technically proficient at the cajon thanks to years of piano classes, has a bigger worry and challenge before her – to look cool while playing the drums.

“All drummers are supposed to look cool. Technically, I can follow the beat but looking good is a challenge. We play in the studio so we have mirrors all around us and I could compare myself to the others – I could tell I’m lagging behind in terms of style,” she chuckled, “At first I tried to emulate their style but I think at the end of the day, I just want to do my best. I’ll train, train, train very hard and hope that’s enough.”

While the cajon drummers have had a few practice sessions so far, rehearsal sessions have yet to commence for Bryan who will be “using his hands and will sing and rap” for his Dikir Barat performance. Instead of performing to folk songs, they will be “injecting a modern feel” with hits by Madonna, Miley Cyrus and even Beyoncé.

“It will be a familiar melody but the words will be very different. It will be a nicer way to get everyone to do a donation,” said Bryan, who shared that he wanted to make a grand entrance at the charity show a la a certain wild child on a wrecking ball.

Unfortunately – but thankfully, the EP turned down his request and there will not be an opening scene of Bryan in his birthday suit on a wrecking ball because The Muttons have already done it for the Singapore Radio Awards.

If the crazy ideas discussed at the duo’s meeting with the production team are anything to go by, we’re sure viewers will be in for a smashin’ (no pun intended) fun ride with the duo.

Hosted by Chua Enlai and Jean Danker, there will also be performances by jazz singer Laura Fygi, Sheila Majid, Shigga Shay, Lorong Boys, Rahimah Rahim, iNCH Chua, Shabir, Benjamin Kheng from The Sam Willows and an acrobatic crew from Cirque De Soleil’s travelling act Totem.

Catch the President’s Star Charity 2015 ‘Live’ on Sunday, October 18 on Channel 5 at 7.30pm.
The encore telecast will be on Saturday, October 24 on Channel 5 at 5pm.

Telepoll hotlines 1900-112-8821 (for $5 donation), 1900-112-8822 (for $20 donation) and 1900-112-8823 (for $100 donation) are open from September 23 to October 24 midnight.

Hannah Quinlivan receives S$4,472 for her small part in drama series

Before she officially became Mrs Jay Chou, Hannah Quinlivan was a small-time actress who earned a meagre 20,000 yuan (approximately S$4,472) for a bit role in the Taiwanese–Chinese drama series Moon River in 2013, Taiwan media reports.

On top of suffering abuse on screen — getting her ears pinched, having to shelter the second female lead with an umbrella — Hannah had very little screen time, and was paid less than a C-list Chinese actress.

The drama series is airing on China’s Hunan TV and Taiwan’s GTV. Netizens reacted with shock at the paltry sum Hannah received.

These days, Hannah’s star is on the rise, and after marrying pop singer Jay Chou in 2014 and giving birth to their daughter, nicknamed “Little Chou,” this year, the actress–model has been a favourite among fashion brands, and was spotted attending Milan Fashion Week recently.

Justin Bieber rants about fan photos

Justin Bieber wishes fans would "respect him" when asking for photos.

The 'What Do You Mean?' hitmaker went on a rant on Snapchat about being bombarded for selfies while out and about.

In a series of videos, Justin can be heard saying: "The way you ask or approach me when you want a photo with me is going determine if I take a photo or not.

"If I'm walking somewhere or arriving somewhere and you guys are asking me to take a photo, if I don't respond, if I continue to keep walking, the likelihood is that I probably don't want to take a photo at that moment.

"If you start screaming louder that's not going to make me take a photo more."

The 21-year-old star continued to speak out to fans, insisting he is happy to take pictures with fans, but only if they are polite, and hopes his loyal Beliebers will be understanding if he can't always accommodate snaps.

He added: "I want to enjoy the moment like you're enjoying the moment but I can't enjoy it if I'm not feeling there's any respect given to me that moment.

"Usually the chances are I'll take a photo but if perhaps I don't, or I'm not in the mood to take a photo that moment, please just respect me and just treat me the way you want to be treated."

Justin further questioned whether fans who bombard him in the streets are there "to see me in the first place" or "so you could tell people about it?"

The singer concluded: "Just remember I'm not unattainable, unreachable, I'm just like you and I communicate just like you, so next time remember."

Chin Ka Lok, Angela Tong welcome second daughter

Hong Kong actor and stuntman Chin Ka Lok announced the arrival of his second daughter, named Kassidy, while at a Hong Kong Stuntman Association event on Wednesday.

Ka Lok said he was woken up by his wife, actress Angela Tong, and the pair sped to hospital. He stayed by his wife’s side in the delivery room and got to cut the cord. “From getting out of bed to the end of delivery it took us only 1 hour 17 minutes, and we were in the delivery room for only about 45 minutes,” he said.

Angela gave birth to a 6-lb Kassidy naturally. The couple’s eldest, Alyssa, is 2.

Asked which parent the new addition resembled, Ka Lok said, “Me, of course! But mummy said if this daughter doesn’t look like her she’ll be upset. So I’ll say the younger sister looks like the older one!”

On why his daughter was named Kassidy, Ka Lok said it was due to his less than outstanding command of English, and that the newborn’s Chinese name was still not chosen and may be left to Ka Lok’s father to decide. “We’ll see if we continue using ‘Kai’ as the first character,” the actor said. Alyssa’s Chinese name features ‘Kai’ as its first character.

Ka Lok added he hadn’t thought about what to reward his wife with, and joked that all his possessions are listed under her name. “I’m thankful to my wife for these two valuable presents, and I will treasure these three women!”

Whether the couple will try for another child is up to Angela, Ka Lok said. “I’d like to take a break, because if you count our helper, there are now four women in my household!”

Ya Hui hospitalised for suspected food poisoning

At 6am this morning (September 25), MediaCorp actress Ya Hui shared a picture on Instagram that stirred up worry amongst her followers.

In the post, which has garnered over 2,000 likes so far, an IV drip needle is shown inserted into her hand. She accompanied it with the caption “So this is how painful it is” in Chinese. Over a hundred fans quickly expressed their concern and well-wishes in the comments section.

Too weak and tired to speak on the phone, Ya Hui shared with Toggle what happened via text message. According to her, she started feeling unwell at about 11.30pm, and began vomiting every half an hour until 2am. Things only got worse after that when she started having diarrhoea (while still throwing up at the same time), and it even got to a point where she was vomiting water as well.

Singapore’s current haze only made matters worse: at 7pm last night (September 24), the three-hour PSI (Pollutant Standard Index) crossed the “Hazardous” 300 mark for the first time this year. Ya Hui claimed that these conditions caused her to have breathing difficulties, weakening her further.

After she was rushed to the hospital in the early hours this morning, doctors discovered that in addition to her vomiting and diarrhoea, Ya Hui was also sporting a high fever at 39 degrees Celsius. These symptoms worried her at first, but a blood test determined that there was nothing out of the ordinary, leading to suspicions of food poisoning.

Ya Hui recently wrapped up filming for Channel 8’s long-form drama 118 and is currently shooting upcoming Chinese New Year series House of Fortune alongside Thomas Ong, Chris Tong, Kym Ng and Shane Pow.

Vladimir Putin offers to meet Elton John

Vladimir Putin has offered to meet with Sir Elton John.

The Russian president called the 'Rocket Man' singer to apologise after he was recently pranked by TV presenters Vladimir Krasnov and Alexei Stolyarov and is keen to find the time for a discussion with the star, who previously requested a meeting with the premier to discuss his stance on gay rights.

Putin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said: "Putin called and said: 'I know you were called by pranksters. Don't get offended by those guys, they are harmless, though this certainly does not justify their actions.

"And Putin said he knew what a popular artist Elton John is, and if their schedules allow it, he is ready to meet and discuss any questions that interest him."

During the hoax call, the 68-year-old singer agreed to attend a gay pride parade in Moscow and spoke of his concern about violence in Russia towards members LGBT community.

He also asked for a face-to-face meeting with the president, whose country has long been blasted for its treatment of homosexuals.

Elton said: "I would welcome [dialogue] because things get done better when you see somebody and you meet them. If both our offices can find a convenient date where we can convene and have a really wonderful discussion ... that would be a miracle. It would be fantastic, and it would be a dream come true."

Afterwards he took to Instagram to post a picture of Putin and wrote: "Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today. I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia. @president_vladimir_putin @ejaf #lgbt #lgbtrights #ShareTheLove (sic)."

The pranksters aired a recording of the conversation on state TV, before publishing it on YouTube.

They said they couldn't resist calling Elton after the singer recently said he would love to discuss the issue with Putin.

They told ABC News: "We just couldn't pass up this opportunity to see what Elton John would say if he thought he was really speaking to Putin."

Could Kenji Wu and Laurinda Ho be through?

Another Stanley Ho scion may be out of love.

After Mario Ho’s relationship with pop star Yumi was reported to be in trouble, his half-sister Laurinda Ho may be going through a similar fate.

On Sunday Laurinda posted a message on Instagram: “Up until now, I’m content with loneliness.” Fans took it to mean that her four-year relationship with Taiwanese singer Kenji Wu was on the rocks, and wondered whether being apart from Kenji for long periods caused the rift. Though Laurinda deleted the post soon after, the rumours lived on.

During a recent interview, Kenji answered questions on Laurinda without much reservation, but a friend standing on the side let slip that Kenji hadn’t seen Laurinda in a long time.

The singer is known for being open and forthcoming in interviews, but a question sent to him by instant messaging afterwards went unanswered.

It’s been reported that Kenji and Laurinda’s relationship has always been plagued by tension due to her unusual background. Kenji once said he hated hearing comments about how he needn’t work so hard because he was dating a rich man’s daughter.

Insisting that he would never let a lady foot the bill, Kenji has always paid for their dates and travel expenses, even for Laurinda’s flights to Taiwan to visit him.

Li Nanxing buys herbal tea for Damian Lau

With air quality readings in the unhealthy range for the large part of September, Channel 8 actor Li Nanxing has been busy looking out for his The Dream Makers 2 co-star, Hong Kong screen legend Damian Lau, buying the latter herbal tea and offering up towels and other creature comforts on set.

“In this kind of weather, we should drink more herbal tea. I don’t know how to brew them, though, so I buy them for Damian,” Nanxing said.

Nanxing, Damian and Zoe Tay were filming a flashback scene outdoors when Toggle stopped by for a visit. Damian, who was still under the weather, declined all interviews.

In the highly anticipated follow-up to 2013’s The Dream Makers, Zoe reprises her role as Zhou Weiyun, the reserved head of a variety channel. Li Nanxing joins the cast as a high-level executive competing against Huang Biren’s character, and Damian plays Weiyun’s old friend.

Nanxing and Damian have worked together before, on the local drama series Dare to Strike in 2000, and while Nanxing was in Hong Kong for filming, Damian hosted him and took him out for local food. So despite Damian’s tight two-week schedule in Singapore, Nanxing has tried to return the favour.

Nanxing had to wear a wig with a 90s-style haircut while filming this flashback scene in The Dream Makers 2 set 10 years before. He said, “It’s awkward! However I look at it, it seems the hair on one side is longer than the other, and I keep tugging at it.

“At least this wig snaps on and isn’t glued on — that’s worse.”

His character is also fashionable, and stylists assigned the actor costumes that are close-fitting. “Though I don’t need to diet per se, but to suit the role still have to watch what I eat and make sure I exercise,” Nanxing said.

The 30-year veteran of local television is also busy preparing for the launch of his book, titled “The Real Picture,” out in October. The book details his innermost thoughts on his journey as an actor, and surviving some trying periods in his life, including business failures and battling alcoholism and a gambling problem.

“Life is full of ups and downs, and nobody is perfect,” Nanxing said. “This book is about how I pulled through those dark times, and how people around me gave me opportunities and encouragement.”

In the chapter “The Abjected Top Brother,” he writes how while filming the classic gambling drama The Unbeatables, he got hooked on gambling and couldn’t tell real life from acting — he even believed himself to be a genius gambler like his character.

It was only while playing the role of gambler again years later in The Ultimatum that Nanxing had an epiphany. “I think in acting we must know when to get into character and when to step out of it,” he said.

The Dream Makers 2 premieres December 4 at 9 pm on Channel 8 and airs Monday through Friday.

′Sixteen′ Trainee Minyoung Leaves JYP

Former Sixteen participant and JYP Entertainment trainee Minyoung has left the agency.

Minyoung announced that she left through a post on Instagram on September 23, writing "Hope everyone is doing well. This is Minyoung. I′ve left the agency where I was training."

She continued, "I′m going to try to bear fruit somewhere else. I′m not giving up, it′s nothing like that." In the photo, Minyoung is seen making a heart with her fingers as a sign of thanks to her fans.

Minyoung also wrote, "While I was at the agency, I wanted to communicate with the fans, but I was frustrated because I couldn′t. I wanted to say that I got all of the gifts you sent me. The pretty composition notebook with my name and Pisces drawn on it, the extra copies of manuscript paper, fabric deodorizer, perfume, the pretty accessories, the chocolate that took me two months to finish eating, handwritten letters, propolis, the cute stuffed animals (they′re on my bed) and the message book. I cried a lot looking at that.

Minyoung concluded, "Thank you so much. I got everything. And they were a great source of strength for me. To those who are thinking of me, I′m always thinking of you too. I don′t have anything to give you. But you can take the heart in the photo. ′Sixteen′ Minyoung."

Meanwhile, Minyoung was a participant on Mnet′s Sixteen, a survival program in search of JYP′s next girl group, but she was unfortunately eliminated.

Rapper Beenzino appeared on the September 21 broadcast of JTBC′s Non-Summit, where he brought up his model girlfriend Stefanie Michova. During the show, Beenzino showed off the German he learned from his girlfriend, saying "We speak in English normally, but my girfriend speaks in Korean sometimes and I speak in German at times too."

Beenzino′s girlfriend Stefania Michova is a model from Germany. They haven′t been shy about their relationship, often posting photos of each other on social media. One photo, in particular, of them showing PDA on the street, attracted a lot of attention.

William Chan, Charlene Choi announce break-up

After five years together, Hong Kong celebrities William Chan and Charlene Choi have called it quits.

In a joint statement issued early Sunday morning, the couple attributed their split to public pressure. “All artistes hope it’s their efforts that gain attention, but far more often their personal lives and relationships become the focus, and this slowly turns into a form of pressure,” they wrote.

“We tried to have faith in this relationship and to ignore what others say, and we felt that nothing was insurmountable as long as we loved each other. But this is a greedy and naive thought. Perhaps it’s a test, and it’s a pity that we’re not as strong as we look, that our love isn’t as strong as we imagined.”

The two separated amicably and wished each other well.

Charlene and William’s relationship was never looked upon with much promise, not only due to their three-year age difference (Charlene is older) but also because William was until recently a relative unknown. He only made it big after heading to mainland China to film the fantasy period drama Swords of Legends, which aired last year to high acclaim.

Shortly before the pair announced they were through, Chinese actress Zhao Liying posted on Weibo a photo of her and William, with the timing so coincidental it appeared as if she was staking a claim on the actor.

Liying and William were rumoured to have been uncommonly close on the set of the period drama The Legend of Zu, even holding hands as they read the script together off camera. It is also suspected that Liying’s appearance on Nicholas Tse’s highly rated travel and food programme, Chef Nic, was thanks to William’s connection.

Nicholas Tse’s production company to ‘streamline operations in Hong Kong’

Post Production Office, Nicholas Tse’s company dealing in advertising, gaming, movie and music video production, is rumoured to be planning to cut jobs and pull out of Hong Kong before September ends.

Nicholas’s manager, Mani Fok, issued a clarification: “We’re not pulling out, but we’re streamlining operations in Hong Kong. Due to financial considerations, we’ll be concentrating our efforts on the mainland Chinese market, and the company hopes to develop and grow well.”

The Hong Kong artiste founded Post Production Office in 2003 in Hong Kong with a business partner, and over the years the firm grew from 10 employees to more than a hundred, distributed across offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.

The company counts HSBC, Standard Chartered and Cheung Kong Holdings among its past clients, and was worth HK$6 billion (approximately S$1 billion) in 2014.

Blackie Chen, Christine Fan share photos, video of their twin boys

New parents Blackie Chen and Christine Fan are delighting fans everywhere with photos and a video of their twin sons, nicknamed Fei Fei and Xiang Xiang.

Christine uploaded a clip of the toddlers laughing and holding a conversation in baby-speak on Thursday. “What are they chatting about?” she wrote.

Blackie reposted the video, saying he understood the twins, and added his interpretation: “Mummy should wear more revealing clothes at home, and be more affectionate to daddy!”

Internet users’ comments included: “You’re speaking for yourself,” “Your wife is standing right behind you, and she’s furious.”

Blackie also shared a photo of himself with Fei Fei on his shoulders, which Christine followed up with one of Fei Fei chomping down on Blackie’s ear, Mike Tyson–style. “Daddy, I forgot to tell you my teeth have emerged!” she wrote.

Joi Chua scares public in the guise of a summon aunty

While participating in her maiden movie, songstress and certified optometrist Joi Chua got to experience an entirely different profession: the legendary summon aunty.

The first-time actress shared that while in costume filming for Royston Tan’s new film, 3688, “People didn’t recognise me and thought I was a real summon aunty, so they ran away from me, and some hurried back to drive their cars away or to add more parking coupons.”

“(Parking wardens) are shunned by everyone, it’s so sad!”

At the press event for 3688 held on Tuesday at the National Museum, Joi was joined by her co-stars Brandon Wong, Liu Lingling, Rahima Rahim and rapper Shigga Shay, as well as director Royston Tan.

In his tradition of numerically titled movies — after his feature films 15, 4:30, 881 and 12 Lotus — Royston’s new offering contains a near-pun of the Chinese phrase ‘Xiang Ru Fei Fei’ (it means to have one’s imagination run wild) in its name, and also alludes to the late Taiwanese singer Feng Fei-Fei, who is known for her fondness of unique hats. (Coincidentally, local parking wardens, who are largely female, are nicknamed Feng Fei-Fei for the trademark white canvas hats they wear at work, and Joi’s character in the movie is called Fei-Fei and sings Feng Fei-Fei songs.)

Big dreams
In 3688 Joi plays a parking warden who aspires to be a singer, and despite the harsh realities of life she signs up for a singing competition, only to find out on the day of the grand finals that her father, who suffers from dementia, has gone missing.

Despite 15 years in the local entertainment industry, Joi has never taken up an acting role until now. The collaboration with Royston was born of an old promise between them. “When I first met Joi four or five years ago, I admired her (calm and earnest) temperament,” he said. “So I told her we will definitely get to work together someday.”

Joi added, “When he said that I thought he was just being polite, and I didn’t take his words seriously. But eventually he did look me up, and said he thought I had sensibility so I would have no problem crying on cue.”

“I was surprised. No one had said that about me before — I had always been called rational and objective.”

Acting skills
“Joi really can’t act, you know,” MediaCorp actor Brandon Wong said, to the horror of the cast.

He went on: “I say that because she channels her true emotions in her performance — she’s not putting on a show, so she’s very natural and honest.”

But despite high praise from her co-star, it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing more of Joi on screen. She related that though she has received invitations to be in drama serials and stage productions, she can’t spare the time from her day job as an optometrist at her own eyewear establishment.

Still, Joi relished the experience of acting under Royston’s guidance. “The good thing about him is that he won’t circumscribe your performance,” she said. “He’ll let you run with your own emotions. If he had given me pointers at every step of the way, I wouldn’t have been able to do this.”

3688 comes seven years after Royston’s last feature film, 12 Lotus in 2008, but the director said he feels no pressure to outdo his past projects. He even promised that if 3688 hits $1 million at the box office, people who have been issued parking summonses can bring them in and watch the movie at no charge.

There’s some Joi in being caught by a summon aunty after all.

She told PEOPLE.com: "Everly loves a good dance party.

"She definitely is a 'Frozen' fan at the moment. All we do is dance to 'Frozen' and it's fun. Every now and again, I can get her to change it over and we listen to some actual fun pop music and she'll be like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, so Let It Go.' "

Darren Wang smooching director was just an act

Taiwanese actor Darren Wang’s bold kiss with his Our Times director, Chen Yu-Shan, turns out to be just for show.

After the recent Our Times celebration party, where the infamous kiss took place, Yu-Shan issued a statement saying she hoped “everyone would stop speculating and ruining audiences’ impressions,” and that Darren was interested in Taiwanese actress Eugenie Liu.

At the party, the Darren–Yu-shan smooches weren’t the only ones that day. Darren’s manager clarified that everyone was in a good mood and there was kissing all round. Even actress Vivien Sung, who shared a brief one with Darren, posted a photo of the encounter, seemingly to defend Darren.

Darren’s manager added that he had gone for dinner with Yu-Shan after a media event for Our Times, as Darren was wearing a promo tee then, and that he would have accepted the invitation even if it had been issued by famed film producer Angie Chai, so there was nothing going between Darren and Yu-Shan.

When she was filming director for Taiwan’s Sanlih E-Television, Yu-Shan was known to be caring and affectionate towards her lead actors, including Ethan Ruan and Vanness Wu. And when Hong Kong’s Andy Lau made a cameo in Our Times, she took it upon herself to pin on his lapel microphone.

The Final 1 Top 4: Every elimination was tough for us

If you’re looking for a brutal, Hunger Games-like talent competition where it’s “every man for himself”, you won’t find it with Channel 5’s The Final 1, which is in its second season this year. Sure, the contestants give their best and do what it takes to make it to the top (after all, there’s a glittering $100,000 recording contract waiting for the champion), but it seems that friendship and mutual support are just as important.

We got a first-hand glimpse at this camaraderie when meeting the last four standing – Odelle Sabrin, Jermaine Leong, Charlene Su and Isaac Ong – for an interview on Wednesday. Even with the finals looming overhead, jokes and playfully ruthless jabs were still constantly being exchanged, giving off an air of pals instead of rivals.

This is why it’s not hard to believe them when they claim that every time someone was booted from the Top 10 in previous weeks, the remaining hopefuls would feel just as down – if not worse – than the one who was axed.

“We don’t see each other as competitors; we see each other as friends, so (it’s tough to see) someone get eliminated or not doing well,” said Isaac, who, at 26, is the oldest of the quartet. Odelle, 21, reaffirmed his statement (“Even when we’re the winners of each round, our faces are still black”) while 19-year-old Charlene added that the production team sometimes has to remind them to look happy for the cameras after seeing a buddy go.

“Actually, it’s quite strange: it’s the eliminated contestants who are the most supportive people in the world!” said 16-year-old Jermaine, the youngest. “At one point everyone is sad and disappointed, but after that they always text us and encourage us.”

Isaac had a few examples of such good sportsmanship to share with us. “The week after [Lee] Wei Lun left the show, he came back and sat in the audience to support us as if nothing had happened! And others such as Azhar [Aziz, who was eliminated last Sunday] are telling us that they’re excited for the finals.”

Of course, their empathy for their “fallen” friends doesn’t mean they are lax about their own standing. Recounting the time she found herself in the dreaded bottom two, Odelle confessed, “I felt very small and like I wasn’t good enough – I didn’t even have the mood to practise for the next song.” Charlene, too, battled feelings of defeat and distress when she was in the same position.

Although they have all come a long way since the auditions kicked off in February, there are still the semi-finals, which will see two more finalists out the door, to get through. Then, the grand finals on October 4 will see a shift in the system: public voting will commence, putting the Top 2 at the mercy of the viewers. But before that, the four of them will still have to make an impact on judges Ken Lim, Taufik Batisah and Jaclyn Victor at the semis, which has been the case for the last few months.

Having to pander to professional opinion may sound more daunting that trying to ace a popularity contest, but the finalists are grateful for the validation. “It’s a confidence booster to hear from people in the industry that you have what it takes,” said Isaac.

Jermaine is also happy that they didn’t need to stand out to spectators on a purely superficial level. “People judge others by how they look so they might not had the chance to get to know everyone,” she mused.

On September 27, the Final 1 contenders will graduate from having pre-recorded sessions at *SCAPE, to strutting their stuff live at the refurbished Capitol Theatre. As 2013’s finals featured an array of exciting guest performances from the likes of local actress Rui En and South African singer Jody Williams, audiences can likely expect more star appearances this time around, although nothing has been finalised at the moment.

But that doesn’t mean the Top 4 don’t have a list of dream partnerships: Jermaine voiced her admiration for English musician Ed Sheeran (“I’ve never liked a singer so much before”); Odelle wishes to share a stage with Ed’s fellow Brit Adele or our very own The Sam Willows; and Charlene has a much more down-to-earth vision of herself singing with her very own dad, whom she credited for her singing talent.

As for Isaac, he had quite an interesting request that we’d honestly like to see become a reality too. “I’d like to collaborate with Ken Lim,” he said with a cheeky grin. “I just want to see Ken Lim with a mic!”

Catch The Final 1 semi-finals at 8pm (part 1) and at 9.30pm (part 2) on September 27, and the finals at 8pm on October 4, LIVE on Channel 5. For more information and features on The Final 1, visit our microsite.

John Stamos doing better than ever

John Stamos feels better than he has in 10 years.

The 52-year-old actor underwent a stint in rehab in July, a month after he was arrested for driving under the influence and taken to hospital for an undisclosed condition, and says being taken in by police was a "turning point" following a "rough year".

He told Details magazine: "I've had a rough year with my mom dying, so it all came to a head, and it was a turning point.

"You either continue on that path - and some of it's fun, but a lot of it's not - or there's this other thing, this golden opportunity sitting there with all this work and all this goodwill that you have going for you. That's the key. I feel better than I've felt in a decade."

The 'Fuller House' star - whose beloved mother Loretta Phillips Stamos died last September - was arrested on June 12 after police officers were alerted to the fact he'd been drinking when he started driving erratically along Santa Monica Boulevard.

He was handcuffed before being taken to hospital "due to a possible medical condition".

Following the incident, he took to his Twitter account to thank his fans for their support.

He wrote: "Thanks to everyone for their love & support. I'm home & well. (sic)"

The 'ER' star also showed his appreciation to the hospital staff who looked after him, adding: "Very appreciative of the BHPD & Cedars for their care. (sic)"

Jimmy Lin’s wish on son’s 6th birthday: Return to your old self

Singer, actor and star father Jimmy Lin, who shot to fame at age 17, hopes his only son, Kimi Lin, won’t have to grow up with excessive media attention and miss out on a normal childhood.

For Kimi’s sixth birthday celebration yesterday, the 40-year-old shared photos of the occasion and heartfelt messages with fans on Weibo. “Kimi’s birthday party was a success!” he wrote. “Thank you all for your concern for Kimi. I wrote him a letter when he turned four, and how I’ve written him another.

“I hope he can return to life before (becoming famous), but he will always be our pride and joy. Happy birthday to Kimi!”

Jimmy and Kimi took part in the first season of hit Chinese reality show Where Are We Going, Dad?, a remake of the South Korean show Dad! Where Are We Going? The young Kimi became a household name after appearing on the series.

In his letter, Jimmy added that he wished Kimi would retain his own personality, and gave the youngster life advice. “Our birthday wish for you is that you’ll stay strong, kind and determined, and grow up happy.”

Moon Lau comes between Linda Chung, Philip Ng?

After Hong Kong actor Ruco Chan and pop star Aka Chio of the band Super Girls, actress Moon Lau has become the latest celeb rumoured to have caused a rift between compatriot artistes Linda Chung and Philip Ng, who have been dating for eight years.

According to Hong Kong media, it was revealed on Tuesday that sparks flew between Philip and Moon when they were filming scenes last month for the upcoming period drama Heroes of the Walled City.

With both their birthdays falling in September, Philip and Moon made an appearance together at TVB’s birthday celebration for September babies. Afterwards, the two were seen carrying matching luggage cases and leaving together in a taxi, heading towards Philip’s home in Cheung Sha Wan district for a 90-minute meal of noodles nearby.

Moon has declined to comment on the event, while Philip clarified through his manager that the luggage cases were a lucky draw gift from the birthday celebration. Philip also said that he and Moon had made plans to dine together long before and both happened to be free that night, so they went ahead with it.

Philip said, “Whether it’s for guys or girls, I think becoming friends after collaborating at work and then having a meal together is perfectly natural, and eating out with friends doesn’t make anyone a player.”

Linda, however, might think differently. The actress is reportedly upset and friends are keeping her company to cheer her up.

Moon is no stranger to controversy. Since coming in third in the 2013 Miss Hong Kong pageant, the 26-year-old has been photographed kissing Hong Kong actor You-Nam Wong in his car, and rumoured to have pursued Arnaldo Ho, a scion of Macau’s famous casino family.

Jessica Chastain: I've embraced my inner geek

Jessica Chastain loved making 'The Martian' because it allowed her "inner geek" to flourish.

The 38-year-old actress - who stars alongside Matt Damon in the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi movie - has revealed how she sealed her role in the film, which taps into her interest in space travel.

The flame-haired beauty recalled: "I didn't get a call that said Ridley Scott wants me for the movie. It was more like, 'Do you want to meet with Ridley for the film?' Because, you know, maybe Ridley meets me and goes, 'Oh, she's terrible, let's not put her in the movie.'

"But I was really excited by it because also I'd just done 'Interstellar' and I'd become really interested in space exploration."

Jessica forms part of a star-studded cast for the movie, which also includes Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Michael Pena and Kate Mara, and she thoroughly enjoyed working on the project.

She told Variety: "I knew that to play an astronaut it would kind of open the doors at NASA and my inner-geek would fly! And I would learn so much, so I was very excited."

Sonia Sui stuck indoors due to haze in Singapore

All are equal before the haze — even Taiwanese actress–model Sonia Sui has been stuck indoors due to air pollution in Singapore.

On Monday, Sonia shared two photos on Facebook showing the poor weather and its effect on her family. Her husband, Tony Chia, is seen in one standing on their balcony staring out at the grey skies beyond.

“The disappointed father,” Sonia wrote. “Lately the air in Singapore is uncommonly hazy and charred, even adults can’t make it outside, and though Tony prepared strollers to take Max for a walk by the harbour, he’s helpless now.”

Fans left her comments telling her not to venture out, that infants shouldn’t go out before they pass their first month, and that they could push the strollers around indoors instead.

Sonia gave birth to her first child, Max, in Singapore on August 30 and has been recuperating in the country

Aileen Tan chips tooth, but filming for Long Long Time Ago goes on

Veteran local actress Aileen Tan will play her character in the new movie Long Long Time Ago while bearing her recently acquired broken tooth, after the movie’s director, Jack Neo, forbade her to fix the chipped upper lateral incisor because he said it gave her character a stronger personality.

Aileen, Jack and other members of the cast, including actor Mark Lee, were speaking at a press conference for Long Long Time Ago last week ahead of the start of filming.

In this latest project by Jack set in the 60s in Singapore, Aileen plays Mark’s older sister, who agrees to an arranged marriage so that she can use the bride price to support her brother in opening a store. She is soon widowed and kicked out, with five young children to raise. The story takes place against the backdrop of the 1969 race riots and other iconic post-independence moments.
Aileen related that before the three months of filming in Ipoh, Malaysia, began, she attended a send-off party a friend hosted for her, but fell down and broke her tooth.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh no, I have filming, what shall I do?’” she said. “So I sent a photo to Jack to tell him about my chipped tooth.”

“Who knew he would be so calm, and he even said it was a good omen!”

The cast’s latest challenge was the flooding scene, for which the production crew hired local construction firm Koh Brothers to build a 20 m x 12 m pool. With a depth of 1.2 m, the pool took almost 300 cubic metres of water to fill, which cost Jack a tidy five-figure sum and made Long Long Time Ago his most expensive movie yet.

The team even loaned from Mindef the boats used for rescue during the 1969 floods, to keep the film authentic.

The scene took three days to film, and for more than eight hours a day the main cast splashed about in the tap water–mud mixture. According to Aileen, the pool of water had not been refilled for two weeks, so it grossed her out having to get into it and the water made her skin itch. But the professional actress toughed it out.

Her co-star Mark wasn’t bothered by the muddled water, though. “I’m not worried about it, because my complexion was never OK to begin with!”

Long Long Time Ago boasts a budget of S$5 million and is slated to be released early next year.

Dame Helen Mirren thinks marrying later is a good idea

Dame Helen Mirren thinks marrying later in life "is a very good idea."

The Oscar winning-actress, 70, is glad she waited until she was 52 years old before marrying Taylor Hackford in 1997 after 11 years of dating, and believes many young women rush down the aisle because they "have a princess complex."

She said: "I think marrying late is a very good idea - it worked out for me. In general, I'd say it's not a great idea to marry young. And it's a really terrible idea to get married for the frock.

"I was lucky because I'd worn so many incredible dresses as costumes. But girls nowadays have a princess complex - they're longing to have the gorgeous dress, be the centre of attention and live the dream for 24 hours."

The 'Trumbo' star also says it is very important for women to maintain their independence.

She said: "At 70 years old, if I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to use the words 'f*** off' much more frequently.

"It annoys me when I see men with an arm slung round their girlfriend's shoulders. It's like ownership. Of course, when you're young, you want the guy to take your hand and look after you. But when I see girls being leaned on, I want to say, 'Tell him to get his damned arm off your shoulder.' "

Meanwhile, Helen, who has no children of her own, claims she has "no idea" what Taylor's adult sons from previous relationships, Rio and Alexander, or his grandchildren think of her.

She told the Daily Mail's You magazine: "I honestly don't know what the children think of me - because I come and go in their lives. I'm not baking them cookies on weekends! I waft in and out, and I think they understand that I'm not the normal sort of grandmother.

"All I'd say to them is that aging is an adventure. It's a frightening adventure because health becomes an issue.

"Growing old is not for p***ies - you've got to have courage. But then, you've got to have courage in life anyway."
