Jacky Cheung on why he refuses to appear on I Am A Singer

Hong Kong singer-actor Jacky Cheung has continuously refused to appear on popular singing competition I Am A Singer, despite the urgings of his good friend, singer Han Hong, and the producers of the show, who have invited him to come on the programme multiple times.

Recently, the 55-year-old decided to shed some light on his decision to stay away from the singing competition after keeping mum on the reason behind his insistence for several months. The Heavenly King revealed that he feels that the biggest flaw of the show is the judging panel, as he cannot understand why all the contestants, who are all formidable singers in their own right, have to be subjected to criticism from judges who know nothing about singing.

He then went on to share that singing is in essence, the creative work of the singer themselves. However, when they go on I Am A Singer, they are subjected to the judges interpreting their feelings and singing performances as they deem fit. The contestants also have to butter up the judges and the audience, the thought of which leaves him “full of disdain”.

Additionally, Jacky also alleged that singing competitions exist for the sole purpose of cooking up juicy headlines and to get comments from the public, and that the actual performances take a backseat compared to the first two factors.

Thus, Jacky feels that recent singing competitions have lost their initial meaning, and he therefore sees no need to take part in them. Finally, Jacky shared that other than concentrating on his next album, he also has to deal with stress from the outside world.

Thus, he shared his wish to lead a simple life that’s free of stress and pressure from now on, which is another reason why he wants to avoid participating in reality singing contests.
